The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested the father of a three-year-old girl who was severely abused by her stepmother in Winneba, Central Region.
The incident occurred when the stepmother, identified only as Akaima, a Liberian national, allegedly poured boiling water on the child’s private part as punishment for bedwetting. The child, who was visiting her father during the holidays, is currently in critical condition at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.
Medical officers say the injuries are severe and will require complex surgical procedures to restore her reproductive organs.
The case has sparked outrage, with the Mother and Child Rescue Unit of Challenging Heights — a local NGO — covering the child’s medical bills and demanding thorough investigations.
Meanwhile, police say efforts are underway to apprehend the stepmother, who is the prime suspect. DOVVSU has also highlighted the alarming rate of domestic crimes in Winneba and announced intensified public education campaigns to address the problem.
