The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has scrapped a $5,000 (GH¢58,000) allocation earmarked for fueling the Black Stars’ team bus from the national team’s budget.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams disclosed this during a press briefing on the financial plan for Ghana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers, noting that the decision formed part of measures to ensure transparency and accountability in line with President John Mahama’s directive.
The Black Stars’ budget has often faced public criticism over the high sums allocated for operations. In response, Adams revealed that the traditional $1 million per game budget had been reviewed and adjusted to a combined $1.3 million for the team’s two matches against Chad and Mali on September 4 and 8.
According to the breakdown, $841,290 has been allocated for the fixture against Chad, while $436,600 will cover expenses for the match against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The removal of the $5,000 fuel allocation, which was originally submitted by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), was described by the minister as one of several “eye-catching” reviews aimed at cutting unnecessary costs.
The move has sparked public debate, with many welcoming the decision as a sign of greater scrutiny over national team spending.
