Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, has been elected Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications for the 2025–2026 term. He takes over from Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, who now serves as Vice-Chairperson.

The announcement was made at the Chamber’s 14th Annual General Meeting earlier this month, where members highlighted pressing challenges including infrastructure theft, vandalism of cell sites, destruction of fiber-optic cables, heavy taxation, rising operational fees, and growing cybersecurity threats.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Blewett praised his predecessor’s leadership and emphasized the need for collaboration to tackle industry challenges.

“The telecommunications sector is the backbone of Ghana’s digital economy,” he said. “But the challenges we face demand collective ingenuity and partnership. We must bind together to surmount these obstacles and ensure sustained growth.”

During his one-year tenure, Mr. Blewett will lead advocacy efforts in partnership with the Chamber’s CEO, engage government and industry stakeholders, and push for innovation aimed at expanding digital inclusion. His duties include chairing bi-monthly Governing Council meetings, overseeing strategic initiatives, and representing the Chamber at national and international forums.

Reflecting on the leadership transition, Ms. Obo-Nai noted:
“It’s been a difficult time due to several challenges, but we’ve stood strong. The times ahead require us to work collectively, and I’m confident Stephen’s vision will guide us forward.”

At the AGM, members also approved the Chamber’s 2024 financial statements and authorized the Governing Council to determine auditor remuneration. The Council, made up of the heads of member organizations, functions as the Chamber’s board of directors.

The Chamber serves as the voice of the mobile telecommunications and technology sector in Ghana. It promotes the growth of telecom services and mobile financial solutions through advocacy, coordination, and stakeholder engagement.
