The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man over the alleged production and distribution of locally manufactured alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages suspected to be laced with narcotic substances.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, which traced the suspect to a popular drinking spot known as De-Vicky’s Pub at Akyeremade in the Atwima Kwawoma District of the Ashanti Region.
During a search conducted at a storeroom on the premises, police uncovered seven barrels of locally produced dry gin, commonly known as akpeteshie, 56 bottles of branded Alomo gin filled with the same locally manufactured spirit, two gallons of sobolo, and one barrel of sobolo.
According to the police, preliminary assessments suggest that the seized beverages may be contaminated with narcotic substances, raising serious public health and safety concerns.
The suspect is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations, while the seized drinks have been secured for forensic examination to determine their exact composition.
