Two Arrested in Kenya for Throwing Suspected Chicken Thief into Fire

Police in Nyamira County, Kenya, have arrested two men in connection with a disturbing mob justice incident that involved the brutal assault and burning of a man accused of stealing chickens.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Matongo, Nyamira North, was captured on video and widely circulated online, sparking national outrage.

The suspects, identified as James Nyang’au Kieri and Evans Nyang’au Anyoka, were seen in the footage viciously beating the victim before tossing him into a burning fire.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30. “Through forensic analysis, detectives tracked down the suspects and apprehended them. They are currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment,” the statement read.

In response to the incident, the National Police Service (NPS) condemned the rising trend of mob violence, urging the public to uphold the rule of law.

“The National Police Service expresses deep concern over the alarming rise in cases of mob injustice and their severe implications for public safety. The public is urged to allow the justice system to take its course, as taking the law into one’s own hands will be met with the full force of the law,” the NPS stated.

The victim’s current condition remains unclear, but the case has reignited calls for stronger enforcement against extrajudicial punishment and mob violence in Kenya.
