The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been reported dead, according to a report confirmed by GHOne TV on July 7, 2025.
The details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unknown.
Mr. Kumi was serving his first term in Parliament after winning the Akwatia seat in the contentious 2024 general elections. His time in office was marked by significant legal controversy, including a prolonged legal dispute over his legitimacy as MP.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court convicted him for contempt after he defied an interim injunction that barred him from presenting himself to be sworn in. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest due to his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for court orders.
However, the Supreme Court later overturned his conviction, offering a brief moment of vindication just weeks before his sudden demise.
Mr. Kumi’s death is expected to trigger a by-election in the Akwatia constituency. The New Patriotic Party has yet to officially comment on the development.
Further details on the cause of death and funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
