Fifteen individuals, including a teenage nursing mother, have been arrested in Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, for allegedly engaging in drug peddling and usage. The arrests were carried out as part of a special operation by the Savannah Regional Police Command and partner security agencies to mark World Drug Day on June 25.
The suspects, aged between their late teens and late 20s, were apprehended from various hideouts across the municipality, including cemeteries, abandoned buildings, private homes, and farmlands. Eleven were arrested on the day of the operation, with four more picked up the following day, bringing the total to 15. The group consists of 13 males and 2 females.
Speaking at a press briefing, Savannah Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council, Salisu Be-Awuribe, hailed the operation as both “successful and symbolic,” and warned that further crackdowns would follow across all seven districts in the region.
“Parents must instil discipline in their children. Simply rushing to bail them out is not the solution,” he cautioned.
Mr. Be-Awuribe stressed that the campaign against drug trafficking and abuse would combine enforcement with education and intelligence-led strategies, aiming to rid the region of illegal drug activity.
He commended the ongoing efforts of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOB) but said more must be done to curb drug abuse among the youth. Meanwhile, concerned parents and community members have gathered at the Damongo Divisional Police Command to appeal for leniency for the suspects.
