Tensions flared in Wiamoase, Ashanti Region, over the weekend as a violent clash between rival gangs at a funeral ceremony resulted in the deaths of two young men.
The incident occurred during the burial of a young woman on Saturday in the Afigya Sekyere South District. One of the deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Faisal Haroun, a resident of Aboaso in the Kwabre East Municipality. The identity of the second victim is yet to be confirmed.
Eyewitnesses recount that chaos erupted when members of opposing gangs confronted each other at the funeral grounds. The situation escalated quickly with gunshots ringing out, causing panic among attendees. Faisal Haroun was reportedly attacked in a retaliatory act by a rival group and was later pronounced dead at the Wiamoase SDA Hospital.
Several others sustained injuries during the violent clash and are currently receiving treatment.
Enoch Boakye, Assembly Member for the Wiamoase-Gyidim Tanoso Electoral Area, confirmed the incident and described the confrontation as a tragic end to what was meant to be a solemn event. “The clash happened on the return from the cemetery. Gunshots were heard and the situation got out of hand,” he said.
Faisal was buried shortly after the incident in accordance with Islamic traditions.
Meanwhile, Assembly Member for the Aboaso-Gyamfi Wonoo Electoral Area, Nurain Mohammed, said community leaders are engaging the youth in Aboaso to prevent reprisal attacks. “The situation is now in the hands of the police, and we are urging calm among residents,” he stated.
The Agona Police Command has since launched an investigation into the incident.
