Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has lifted the suspension of four Members of Parliament (MPs) who were penalized following a heated altercation during a vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025. The decision comes after appeals from both the Majority and Minority leaders, urging the Speaker to reconsider the suspension to restore order in the House.

The suspended MPs—Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, and Alhassan Tampuli—are now set to resume their parliamentary duties immediately. Their suspension had sparked significant debate, leading to a Minority walkout that left the Majority to proceed with the vetting of nominees, including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who faced extended questioning by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Announcing his decision, Speaker Bagbin stated, “So I have lifted the suspension order. I do so instantly and it takes effect immediately. The affected Hon. Members are permitted now to enter the precincts of the House. I must say they actually complied with the orders.”

He further assured that investigations into the incident would continue, with the House eventually making a final decision on the matter. The Speaker also commended security agencies for their role in maintaining order during the disruptions.

With the lifting of the suspension, parliamentary activities are expected to return to normal, allowing for a more constructive approach to the vetting process and other legislative duties. However, the incident has reignited discussions about parliamentary conduct and the need for greater decorum in Ghana’s legislative processes.
