Tragedy struck in Bawku on Monday, January 6, 2025, as unidentified gunmen ambushed a bus carrying travellers, primarily women, en route from Bolgatanga to Bawku. The bus, which was under security escort, came under fire during the attack.

The assault claimed the life of Nuaima Awudu, a young trader who had travelled to Bolgatanga for business. Several other passengers sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

This attack follows another violent incident on Sunday, January 5, when a resident was killed while attempting to move between communities. These events have shattered the fragile calm that had returned to the area in recent weeks, leaving residents in fear and reluctant to venture beyond their neighborhoods.

A dawn-to-dusk curfew imposed in November 2024 aimed at restoring order has done little to curb the violence. The latest incidents highlight the persistent volatility in Bawku and raise concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures.
