A tragic incident unfolded off the southern Red Sea coast of Egypt as 16 people, including foreigners, went missing after a tourist boat sank. Authorities report that 28 people have been rescued, with search efforts ongoing.
The boat, identified as the Sea Story, had 44 individuals onboard, including 13 crew members, when it capsized near Marsa Alam during a five-day diving trip. Two British nationals are among the missing, as well as one Finn and four Egyptians.
The vessel issued a distress signal at 05:30 local time (03:30 GMT), and survivors were found in the Wadi el-Gemal area. They are currently receiving medical care, with reports confirming they are in good health.
Although the exact cause remains unknown, survivors claim a large wave struck the boat, causing it to capsize within minutes. The incident occurred despite prior warnings from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority about hazardous marine conditions, including strong winds of up to 43 mph (70 km/h) and waves reaching up to 13 feet.
Red Sea Governor Maj-Gen Amr Hanafi stated that the Egyptian Navy, alongside military aircraft, is conducting around-the-clock rescue operations. The survivors, including tourists from Spain, Britain, Germany, and the United States, have been accommodated in a local hotel.
The Finnish foreign ministry confirmed that one of its nationals is among the missing, while the UK Foreign Office stated it is assisting British nationals and their families. Reports from state media also indicate that two Chinese nationals onboard were safely rescued.
Built in 2022, the Sea Story is a 44-meter vessel with four decks and 18 cabins, designed to accommodate 36 passengers. Egyptian authorities inspected the boat in March 2024, issuing a one-year certificate of validity, and have stated there were no technical issues at the time of the incident.
Marsa Alam, a renowned diving destination surrounded by coral reefs, has seen similar tragedies in the past. Last year, three Britons lost their lives in a fire aboard a dive boat in the same area.
The incident has once again raised questions about maritime safety and the challenges of navigating the unpredictable waters of the Red Sea. Authorities continue to search for the missing, with families and nations anxiously awaiting updates.
