Chief Justice Orders Closure of 7 Courts in Bawku Due to Violent Clashes

Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has mandated the closure of seven courts in Bawku and neighboring communities due to escalating violence. Courts affected include the High Court, Circuit Court, and District Courts in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.

This decision, conveyed by Judicial Service Secretary Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng, is aimed at safeguarding judges, staff, lawyers, and court users amid ongoing conflicts. The Chief Justice has directed court registrars to secure all court assets, and staff have been urged to prioritize their safety.

These closures follow renewed chieftaincy clashes triggered by the return of rival chief Seidu Abagre, who was controversially enskinned as Bawku Naaba in February 2023. The violence has led to 16 deaths and injuries among residents.
