NDC MPs to Repeal E-Levy as They Assume Control in Parliament

Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, MP for Bolgatanga East, announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will proceed with parliamentary business on Tuesday, even if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs boycott.

The NPP’s conditional boycott followed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, causing a shift in the majority.

Dr. Ayine indicated that the NDC intends to repeal several laws, with the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (e-Levy) being a top priority. He emphasized that the NDC is committed to working on behalf of the electorate and will push to implement changes starting Tuesday.

The NDC has consistently opposed the e-Levy, introduced in 2022 to tax electronic financial transactions. Despite their resistance, the levy was passed by Parliament in March 2022, which led to legal challenges and public protests organized by the NDC. If the NDC takes control, they plan to fulfill their promise of repealing the levy, which they view as burdensome to Ghanaians.
