More than 20 protesters from the Democracy Hub group were arrested by police at the 37 Roundabout in Accra on the second day of their three-day protest, which initially focused on the economic crisis but later shifted towards opposing illegal mining, or “galamsey.”
The arrests followed a warning from the police, urging protesters not to return to the location after their Day 1 demonstration. Although the police have yet to release an official statement on the exact number of those detained or the charges they face, it is estimated that over 20 individuals were taken into custody.
The arrests have sparked widespread discussion on social media, with concerns raised about the right to peaceful assembly and calls for clarity on the situation.
Unlike the first day of the protest, which caused major traffic disruptions, traffic at the 37 Roundabout remained fluid on Day 2. Police reportedly took inventory of mobile phones seized from the protesters as part of their response.
