EC Opens Nominations for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will accept nominations for the presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to September 13 this year, according to Regulations 6, 7, and 8 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127). The nomination period and fees, set at GH¢100,000 for presidential candidates and GH¢10,000 for parliamentary candidates, remain unchanged from the 2020 elections.

A statement signed by Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, indicated that interested candidates could download the nomination forms from the EC’s website starting today. Independent candidates must contact the commission for a passcode to access the forms.

For presidential candidates, the nomination forms must be signed by the candidate and at least two registered voters from each district assembly. The forms must also designate a Vice-President candidate and be delivered in quadruplicate by the candidate or two of the signatories.

The completed presidential nomination forms, along with four recent post-card (bust-sized) photographs, must be submitted at the EC’s Head Office between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Presidential candidates must pay a fee of GH¢100,000 at the time of submission, while female candidates and those with disabilities will pay GH¢75,000.

For parliamentary candidates, the nomination forms must be witnessed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, supported by 18 other registered voters in the constituency. The forms must also be delivered in quadruplicate, along with four recent post-card (bust-sized) photographs.

Parliamentary candidates must pay a fee of GH¢10,000 at the time of submission, with female candidates and those with disabilities required to pay GH¢7,500. Payments should be made by banker’s draft, addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

All inquiries regarding the presidential election should be directed to the Chairperson of the EC, while inquiries for parliamentary elections should be addressed to the Returning Officers of the respective constituencies.
