Political tensions erupted at the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly on Wednesday as assembly members voted to reject President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Mensah.

Mensah failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, receiving only 9 out of 19 votes. The decision followed a heated session marked by strong opposition and verbal exchanges between factions within the Assembly.

The vote outcome exposed deep-rooted divisions, with some assembly members expressing open dissatisfaction with the nomination. The charged atmosphere drew concern from observers and residents alike, as the MCE position remains critical for local governance and development planning.

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, who was present during the proceedings, pleaded with the Assembly to reconsider. “We have a lot of things to do,” she said, stressing the importance of confirming the nominee to avoid delays in executing key regional projects.

The rejection leaves the MCE post vacant, with the Presidency now expected to decide whether to renominate Mensah or propose a new candidate for approval.
