NHIA CEO: GHC2m Dialysis Support to Begin June 1st

Dr. Aboagye DaCosta, the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has confirmed the availability of GHC2 million to assist renal patients in need of dialysis. This support is set to commence on June 1, 2024, with preparations underway for a smooth implementation over the next six months.

Many dialysis patients have been unable to afford their treatments due to a recent increase in costs, which has risen from 380 to 491 Cedis. This financial burden has forced these patients, already struggling with their health conditions, into a difficult situation.

Dr. Aboagye, speaking on Joy FM, explained that the GHC2 million would cover two dialysis sessions for patients at Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, and Cape Coast Hospital. He emphasized that the funds are available, and the delay is due to the need to develop VRG codes to enable patients to access the support at healthcare facilities.

He noted that approximately 80% of dialysis patients come from Korle Bu, where a philanthropist supports them with 380 Cedis. Based on this, the NHIA can support two sessions at 222 Cedis per patient due to the high numbers from this facility.

Under the new arrangements, renal patients will not have to pay for dialysis for two sessions at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Dr. Aboagye reassured the public that the GHC2 million allocated for this purpose is insignificant on the NHIA’s budget, as it has already received parliamentary approval. He highlighted the NHIA’s commitment to improving its claim payment process, noting that they currently pay between 180 and 250 million Cedis to facilities every month, and they are on track with their payments.
