In the midst of rising tensions between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, has announced the party’s decision to meticulously document the serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.
This decision comes despite the EC’s steadfast refusal to release this information to the party. Dr. Boamah expressed suspicions, stating that the EC’s refusal only strengthens their belief that something suspicious is happening.
Asserting the party’s right to access this information, Dr. Boamah emphasized, “We have instructed our personnel to meticulously record the serial numbers. The EC cannot justify withholding this vital data from us, especially considering they are funded by Ghanaian taxpayers.”
He raised questions about the EC’s priorities, particularly regarding the recent theft of BVR kits and their serial numbers. “Why is the EC unconcerned about thieves possessing these crucial serial numbers yet doubts the integrity of a registered political entity like the NDC?” he questioned during an interview on May 10, 2024.
Dr. Boamah’s remarks follow the EC’s recent statement refusing to disclose BVR kits’ serial numbers deployed for the ongoing voter registration to the NDC. Citing security concerns, the Commission stressed the pivotal role serial numbers play in device operations and activation code generation.
The EC reiterated that divulging this information to any third party poses a significant risk to the registration process’s security and integrity. However, the EC’s stance has only increased the distrust between the electoral body and opposition parties.
