Kwabena Boateng, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emerged victorious in the Ejisu by-election, following the passing of Member of Parliament and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, on March 7, 2024.
Mr. Boateng secured 27,782 votes, representing 55.8% of the total votes cast. His closest rival, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, an Independent Candidate, garnered 21,534 votes, representing 43.3% of the total votes cast.
Other candidates in the election included Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party, who received 140 votes (0.3%), and Esther Osei of the Convention People’s Party, who received 89 votes (0.2%). Independent Candidates Joseph Agyemang and Atakora Joseph received 222 votes (0.4%) and 23 votes respectively.
The race was fiercely contested, notably between Kwabena Aduomi, a former three-time NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, who contested as an Independent Candidate.
The election was not without controversy, as allegations of vote buying surfaced against Kwabena Boateng’s campaign. In response, the Electoral Commission removed two temporary staff members after a viral video allegedly showed them receiving a bribe during the Ejisu by-election.
Despite the challenges, Kwabena Boateng’s victory underscores the NPP’s stronghold in the Ejisu constituency.
