GPRTU to Discuss Proposed 20% Transport Fare Hike with Transport Ministry

Today, April 10, 2024, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting with the Transport Ministry regarding a proposed 20% increase in transport fares.

This proposal, put forward by the Concerned Drivers Association and the Transport Operators of Ghana, aims to counter the effects of rising fuel prices.

In an interview with Citi News, David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, affirmed their stance on the 20% fare increment, stating, “We are meeting with the ministry but it won’t change anything. We will still take the 20%.”

Mr. Agboado emphasized their determination, saying, “This time around, whether the minister says anything or he plays the gimmicks that he keeps playing, the transport fare will be increased.”

He noted that some regions, including the Western Region and parts of Greater Accra, have already begun implementing the proposed hike.

He concluded by stating, “So it is very welcoming news to the drivers and we have accepted it in good faith and we will take the 20%, whether GPRTU meets with the ministry, we don’t have a problem with it.”
