Kwesi Ahwoi Issues Apology to John Mahama and Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Over “anything can happen” Comments

Kwesi Ahwoi, a prominent figure in Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a public apology to the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, following a recent controversy over his remarks at an event in Accra.

During the event, which was held in support of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Ahwoi suggested that she should be prepared for any scenario that could lead to her presidency. This statement was met with criticism from some NDC members, who interpreted it as implying that Ahwoi did not expect Mahama to complete a potential four-year term if elected.

In a statement released on Sunday, March 24, Ahwoi clarified that he had no intention of wishing harm upon Mahama and expressed regret over the misunderstanding caused by his comments. He acknowledged that he had misspoken and apologized unreservedly to Mahama, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, and the NDC leadership and supporters.

Ahwoi urged the party’s supporters to move past the incident and unite behind Mahama in the upcoming 2024 elections, describing him as a “visionary Nation Builder” who could rescue the country.

The controversy arose at a reception organized by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithful for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, where Ahwoi’s comments were meant to be light-hearted but were misconstrued. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang herself clarified that she was certain Mahama would win the 2024 elections and serve his full term.
