Kojo Oppong Nkrumah Urges GJA to Pressure Authorities Over Assaults on Journalists

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called upon the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to intensify its efforts in compelling both the Ghana Police Service and the Judiciary to effectively handle cases of violence against journalists in the country.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Nkrumah underscored the pivotal roles these institutions play in resolving issues concerning the safety and welfare of journalists.

His remarks follow recent incidents where two journalists were assaulted, prompting the GJA to announce a media blackout on two politicians allegedly involved in the attacks.

Pointing out the limitations of the National Media Commission (NMC) in independently resolving such matters, the Information Minister asserted that the Ghana Police Service and the Judiciary hold the primary responsibility in addressing cases of violence against journalists.

He urged the GJA to consistently hold these institutions accountable, ensuring that reported incidents are thoroughly investigated and pursued through legal channels.

“We must hold the police and judiciary services accountable for the cases reported to them and ensure proper follow-up,” Mr. Nkrumah stated on Monday.

While acknowledging the Ministry’s role in bringing reported incidents to the attention of the police, he stressed the importance of sustained pressure to prevent any negligence in addressing attacks on journalists.

“We must consistently demand accountability from them so that they cannot claim ignorance or lack of evidence. By consistently holding them accountable, we can reach a point where no police command or office can mishandle these reported cases,” he emphasized.
