We Can’t Afford Herve Renard’s Wages – GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is encountering hurdles in its quest to secure a new coach for the Black Stars, with financial limitations presenting a significant obstacle. Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong disclosed that Herve Renard, a two-time AFCON winner, remains the preferred candidate, but the economic situation may hinder his appointment.

Acheampong revealed that the GFA had approached Renard before the World Cup when he was with Saudi Arabia, but the financial constraints at the time prevented them from meeting his wage demands. Despite the previous setback, Renard has expressed continued interest in coaching Ghana, making him the top priority for the GFA.

In an interview with Akoma 87.9 FM, Acheampong emphasized the challenges posed by the country’s current economic state, making it extremely difficult to secure Renard’s services. He mentioned that while Renard remains the primary priority, economic variables must be considered in the decision-making process.

“We approached him prior to the World Cup; at the time, he was with Saudi Arabia. He was interested in the Ghana project, but we couldn’t afford his wage, so we hired Milovan Rajevic,” explained Acheampong. “Herve Renard has always and will remain the primary priority of the FA, but as I previously stated, considering all variables, particularly the economic position of our country, it makes it incredibly difficult to hire him.”

With a deadline of February 2, 2024, for interested applicants to submit their applications, the GFA is under pressure to find a suitable replacement for Chris Hughton. Hughton was dismissed following the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at AFCON 2023.
