Benefits GRA Boss Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah is Allegedly Enjoying

In a recent revelation at the Public Account Committee sitting on Monday, January 29, 2024, concerns were raised regarding the Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, who has been working without a contract two years after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Despite being 60, Rev. Owusu-Amoah is alleged to be enjoying an array of benefits, positioning him as the second-highest-paid government appointee after the Bank of Ghana Governor. In 2023, his reported monthly salary stood at a staggering GHS137,794.80, accompanied by a suite of allowances and privileges that have sparked public debate.

Some of the perks listed include a generous housing allowance of GHS6000, a home enhancement allowance of GHS2000, and a travel per diem of $1500. Notably, he is reported to receive a clothing allowance of GHS10,000, free medical care for spouses and children, and a yearly mandatory medical examination. Additionally, he enjoys a monthly entertainment allowance of GHS1500, a DSTV Premium Service subscription costing GHS700, and an official vehicle with monthly fuel coupons.

Moreover, Rev. Owusu-Amoah is said to receive a salary increase of 20% per annum, further contributing to his substantial compensation package. His two-year extension beyond retirement age raises questions about accountability and adherence to established employment practices within the GRA.

During the committee hearing, Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, probed the GRA Boss on the matter, emphasizing its public interest. Rev. Owusu-Amoah confirmed that he had been working without a contract because he was asked to continue working till the issue is sorted out with the ministry of Finance.
