Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Stabbing Elder Brother to Death

Daniel Obirikwa Adjin has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Accra High Court after being convicted of murdering his elder brother, William Adjin, in 2017.

The jury returned a majority verdict of 5-2, declaring Adjin guilty of murder. Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, who presided over the case, confirmed the life sentence and informed the convicted man that he had one month to appeal the decision at the Court of Appeal.

During the trial, Adjin claimed that the stabbing was an act of self-defense. He explained that his brother attacked him and held his testicles, leading him to stab William in defense. Adjin also cited being intoxicated and confused after discovering that money was missing from his room.

However, the prosecution’s case detailed the tragic events that led to William Adjin’s death. On the evening of March 19, 2017, while their father rested on the porch, Daniel Adjin attacked his brother in their home. The complainant, Daniel Adjei Adjin, who was the son of the deceased, heard his father’s cries for help and rushed to the scene. He found his father bleeding from a stab wound and attempted to prevent further harm by grabbing his brother’s hand.

Despite efforts by the complainant and a neighbor to disarm the accused, the knife broke, and the victim was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later declared dead.

Following the stabbing, Adjin fled to James Town but was eventually apprehended after attempting to harm the complainant’s mother and sister. He was arrested and transferred to the Mamprobi Police Station.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as “Exsanguination and Multiple Stab Wounds.” Four witnesses testified for the prosecution, establishing a strong case against the defendant.
