 Education Minister Urges Students Not to Take Free Senior High School Education For Granted

In a recent visit to Ejisuman Senior High School, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education, emphasized the significance of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and urged students not to take the opportunity for granted. The minister, who actively engaged in teaching a science class during his visit, stressed the transformative impact of free education on students’ lives.

During his interaction with students, Minister Adutwum highlighted the historical context, pointing out that free education was not the norm in the past. He shared personal experiences, recalling the financial burdens students faced during his time, where additional fees and boarding expenses were the norm.

Addressing the students, the minister cautioned against underestimating the value of the Free SHS policy. He emphasized that some students might not have been able to attend school if not for this initiative. Minister Adutwum pointed out the potential financial strain, stating, “If you were to pay GHC 5,000.00 every semester after buying all your needs for school, some of you wouldn’t be here.”

He urged students to appreciate the government’s intervention and encouraged them to make the most out of the educational opportunities provided. Dr. Adutwum emphasized that students should work hard to justify the investment being made in their education by the Government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In addition to emphasizing the importance of the Free SHS policy, Minister Adutwum advised students to stay focused on their academic goals. He expressed concern about potential distractions, urging students to avoid negative tendencies that could hinder their academic progression.

Addressing challenges related to students’ preferences for certain schools, the minister encouraged them not to be discouraged by their current environment. He emphasized that academic success depended on individual effort, irrespective of the school’s size or status.
