The Ghana Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has intensified its call for the government to settle long-overdue allowances owed to nursing trainees across various colleges.
Jasper Dzorkah, the National President of GRNMA, conveyed the association’s disappointment with the government’s failure to disburse owed payments. Dzorkah highlighted the extent of the outstanding dues, citing delays ranging from five months for first-year trainees, 24 months for second-years, and approximately 18 months for third-year trainees. Moreover, those in their service period are reportedly owed 12 months of allowances before the rotation commenced, with additional delays spanning from July up to the present.
The issue has sparked concern among stakeholders, with growing dissatisfaction over the government’s lack of action in addressing the unpaid allowances. The repercussions of this delay were evident in July 2023 when nursing trainees boycotted their clinical practicals in protest against the non-payment of their allowances.
Trainees have stressed the financial strain caused by the delay, emphasizing that the allowances are crucial for covering their school fees and other essential expenses. This situation has left many trainees grappling with financial difficulties, impacting their ability to sustain themselves throughout their educational pursuits.
