Ghana Moves 2023 AFCON Training Camp from Johannesburg to Kumasi

The Ghana Football Association has made a significant alteration in their preparations for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. After a comprehensive review meeting involving both the Management and Technical Team, the decision was made to change the initial plan of camping the Black Stars in South Africa.

Originally slated to commence their training camp in South Africa from December 31, 2023, for a ten-day period ahead of the tournament in Cote D’Ivoire, the team will now set up camp in Kumasi starting from January 2, 2023.

In light of this change, the scheduled international friendly against Botswana, which was set for January 8, 2023, in Johannesburg, has been canceled. The Football Association is actively seeking a new opponent for the team to ensure a robust buildup to the tournament in Abidjan.

Notably, the Black Stars’ Technical Team had emphasized the need for a serene and secluded training environment. Consequently, the team’s hotel in Kumasi will strictly restrict access to the public and media. Additionally, all training sessions will be held behind closed doors, inaccessible to both the public and media.

However, the team intends to engage with the media during a dedicated session, while the friendly match will be open to the public. Following the match, a post-match press conference is scheduled to take place.

The Association has called for public understanding and support to facilitate the Black Stars’ Technical Team’s objectives during their camping period in Kumasi.

Ghana finds itself placed in Group B, alongside formidable opponents Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Cape Verde on January 14, followed by matches against Egypt on January 18 and Mozambique on January 22 in the other Group B fixtures.
