Black Sherif Faces Criticism Over Advocating for Exclusive Ghanaian Music Play During Christmas

Ghanaian artist Black Sherif has found himself under heavy criticism after advocating for the exclusive playing of Ghanaian music during the Christmas season. His remarks at the #PlayGhana campaign organized by The Creative Arts Agency at the Ministry of Information sparked a heated debate on social media.

During the event, Black Sherif, accompanied by veteran musician Samini, encouraged Ghanaians to prioritize local music, stating, “Play Ghanaian music during this festive season to support our culture and artists.”

However, the situation took a turn when a Twitter user with the handle @winco_3 shared the video clip accusing Black Sherif and other Ghanaian artists of wanting to ban foreign music in the country. The tweet ignited a storm of backlash, with many criticizing the artist for allegedly disregarding the international audience that supports his music.

In response to the accusation, Black Sherif took to Twitter to clarify his stance, expressing, “I don’t know where in my speech that says ban foreign music. How crazy can you spin a message that says love your culture and try play local music to your visitors if you wanna see your country creatives break boundaries.”

The “Oh No” hitmaker further addressed the misunderstanding, emphasizing, “How do I want foreign music banned in my country while I work with foreign producers and artistes? But agenda set ah lie? Good luck to everybody.”

This controversy has sparked discussions across social media platforms, with divided opinions on whether advocating for exclusive local music play during the festive season promotes cultural pride or restricts artistic diversity.
