Nkwanta Clashes: Business activities halted following imposition of curfew

The imposition of a curfew in the Nkwanta South Municipality has resulted in a complete cessation of business activities, significantly impacting the town’s usual operations. Additionally, a noticeable exodus of residents is observed, presumably seeking safety amidst the unrest.

In response to the escalating tensions, clashes erupted on Tuesday between the Adele, Challa, and Akyode tribes, stemming from disagreements related to the observance of rites connected to the 2023 annual Yam Festival. The violent clashes resulted in numerous injuries and a tragic loss of 13 lives.

In efforts to restore order and ensure the safety of residents, authorities have enforced a curfew in the town. Reports indicate that individuals found outdoors beyond curfew hours are subjected to military intervention, facing physical consequences.

To address the pressing situation, a joint Military and Police patrol team has been deployed, intensifying security measures in the area. Regional Minister Joshua Makubu chaired a meeting with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to strategize and find a lasting resolution to the disturbances, emphasizing the need for immediate action to quell the unrest and restore peace in Nkwanta.
