Garu MP to Petition CHRAJ Over Alleged Military Brutalities

The Member of Parliament representing Garu, Albert Alalzuuga Akuka, has revealed his intention to file a formal complaint with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). The purpose of this petition is to request an investigation into allegations of military brutality against his constituents.

This controversy stems from an incident where personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces reportedly conducted a raid on Garu during the early hours of October 28. Their stated objective was to recover weapons that were believed to have been used in an attack on National Security operatives on October 24.

Albert Akuka, the Garu MP, expressed his concerns about the alleged mistreatment of his constituents. He described how residents were reportedly forcibly awakened from their slumber and subjected to brutal beatings. He also mentioned that some individuals were targeted while engaged in Quran recitals at a local mosque, all under the pretext of seizing weapons.

Mr. Akuka conveyed his distress over these actions, particularly highlighting an incident where some individuals were compelled to drink water from a gutter, which he argued could pose serious health risks. He is determined to uncover the individuals responsible for authorizing these actions.

The Garu MP strongly condemned what he deemed an abuse of power and uniform. He demanded an official apology from the military’s high command, labeling the military’s actions as barbaric and unjustifiable.

In addition to demanding an investigation into the matter, Mr. Akuka confirmed that he and his team would take the case to CHRAJ, urging them to probe the allegations thoroughly. He stressed the importance of holding the military accountable for their actions, citing the violations of human rights and the unacceptable nature of the situation. He called on all Ghanaians to denounce such actions.
