Accra, Ghana – September 27, 2023

In a recent development, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have vehemently denied claims made by the La Traditional Council regarding the release of part of the Burma Camp land. This contentious issue has sparked debates and concerns within the nation.

The La Traditional Council had earlier asserted that the government had officially handed over 114 acres of land from the Burma Camp to them during a ceremony symbolizing the reclamation of this land. However, the GAF has issued a statement refuting these claims, stating that they have not received any directives from the Ministry of Defence to release the land to the La Traditional Council.

The GAF’s statement clarified, “Neither has any government agency directed the Ghana Armed Forces to release any land to any Traditional Authority. Indeed, those lands remain a critical need of the Ghana Armed Forces for the preservation of State security.”

The GAF acknowledges that discussions are ongoing through a committee established by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to deliberate on and recommend possible resolutions for the land issue. However, they take exception to the premature announcement made by the La Traditional Council, fearing that it may jeopardize the cordial relations between the GAF and the council.

In their statement, the GAF expressed their desire to see a peaceful resolution to the matter through the committee’s work, reiterating their commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Ghana Armed Forces. They concluded by advising the general public to refrain from encroaching upon Ghana Armed Forces lands, particularly the Burma Camp lands.
