56 Galamseyers Arrested at Tarkwa-Nsuaem in Joint Security Operation

The Western Regional Security Council, in collaboration with the Second Infantry Battalion, the Police, and the Western Naval Command, arrested 56 illegal miners (galamseyers) at Kadadwen in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

The operation led to the arrest of 47 males and 9 females across seven galamsey sites. The suspects have since been handed over to the Western Regional Police Command for further processing.

Beyond Tarkwa-Nsuaem, the security task force extended their clampdown to the Ahanta West Municipality and the Mpohor District, where illegal miners fled upon the arrival of the security forces, leaving behind their equipment and creating environmental devastation.

During the raid, security forces seized three motorbikes, nine pumping machines, and three excavators. Additionally, 25 Changfang machines were burned to prevent further illegal mining activities. The illegal miners were found operating within the Norpalm oil plantation and Ghana Rubber Company Ltd areas.

The joint operation was led by Western Regional National Security Liaison Officer Brigadier General Musa Whajah. Speaking to Channel One TV, he emphasized that the operation forms part of President Mahama’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the environment.
