The Cyber Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has imprisoned the general managers of free-to-air (FTA) television stations, AB TV and Amen TV at Accra, for allowing fraudsters to improve their activities on their TV stations.
The managers in an exercise mainly to suddenly restrain persons who advertise on television stations to increase their money and fraud, were convicted by the police.
The Cyber Crime Unit informed that the culprits would be arraigned for their act “because these are adverts they knew at the time of promoting that what the adverts purported to do was not true.”
However, the police disclosed that, initial search showed that the culprits utilised their free-to-air channels to give way to advertisement of nefarious activities in the media and the suspected fraudsters finally dupe innocent ones who either send money to the fraudsters through mobile money transfers or meet them at agreed places to present the money.
Dr. Gustav Herbert Yankson, the Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), revealed to the Daily Graphic, monitored by Ghana Articles that the Unit had noted that there were many television stations improving the activities of these fraudsters, while the police had received thousands of complaints against the fraud and blackmail of the ‘money doublers’.
