17 Arrested For Illegal Mining In Western Region As Police Intensify Anti-Galamsey Operations

The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested 17 individuals in a renewed crackdown on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, during two separate operations on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

The arrests, carried out at Adamaso and Wassa Mamieso, form part of intensified efforts by the police to curb environmental degradation and unlawful mining activities in the region.

At Adamaso, 12 suspects were apprehended. They include Abraham Antwi, 26; Jeremiah Adusei, 37; Eric Martey, 41; George Amoah, 45; Misasa Jonas, 25; Larry Ndaaso, 42; Ezekiel Dome, 22; Bismark Adu, 19; Alex Sabla, 34; Godfrey Acheampong, 29; Ebenezer Mensah, 21; and Emmanuel Appiah, 25. During the operation, police seized five pumping machines suspected to be used for illegal mining.

In a separate intelligence-led operation along the Mamie River near Wassa Mamieso, five more suspects were arrested: Junior Simon, 21; Stephen Tetteh, 30; Samuel Kwarteng, 19; Matthew Wofatey, 20; and Seidu Ayigbe, 30. A “Sunny Excavator 215 Control Board” was also retrieved from the scene.

All 17 suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the seized equipment remains in evidence for prosecutorial purposes.

The Western Central Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to dismantling illegal mining networks and urged the public to support the fight by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
