Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued an unreserved apology to Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, Clerk of the Appointments Committee, following his heated outburst during a recent vetting session.
Afenyo-Markin had earlier accused the Clerk of bias and procedural lapses, leading the Minority caucus to demand her resignation over alleged unprofessional conduct and perceived favoritism toward the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, following an appeal from Adaklu MP and Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, Afenyo-Markin took to the parliamentary floor on Tuesday to publicly express regret for his comments.
Admitting that frustration led to an unprofessional reaction, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the need for decorum in parliamentary proceedings and apologized to the Clerk and her family.
“Mr. Speaker, let me unreservedly say to the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Mrs. Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, I am sorry. Let me also say to her husband that if my comments have caused him any distress, I hereby unreservedly apologize. To her children, let me also extend my sincere apologies.”
He further extended his apology to her extended family and parliamentary colleagues, recognizing that he could have handled the situation better.
The apology comes amid ongoing tensions between the Minority and Majority factions in Parliament, particularly regarding the vetting process of Samuel Nartey George for the position of Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations. The Minority has openly opposed his approval, citing issues with his conduct and past statements.
