Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East Region has been shut down indefinitely following violent clashes between two student groups from the Frafra and Kusasi ethnic communities.
The directive to close the school was issued by the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, after tensions erupted on Sunday, July 20, over an alleged mobile phone theft. The disagreement escalated into a large-scale brawl, resulting in the burning of school property and widespread unrest on campus.
According to sources at Citi News, four students have been arrested by police in connection with the incident. However, one of the suspects reportedly escaped during transportation to the station after allegedly grabbing a police officer’s magazine—a development that has raised serious security concerns.
In anticipation of further violence or reprisal attacks, authorities deployed a joint team of police and military personnel to escort students from Bawku safely back to their hometowns under tight security.
Officials say investigations are ongoing, and steps are being taken to restore peace and order. The school will remain closed until further notice.
