The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced the tragic passing of one of their players, Norin Betani, just ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games women’s football qualifier against Ghana.
Initially named in the squad to face Ghana, Betani fell ill before the team’s departure to Accra. Suspected to have contracted malaria, the 24-year-old striker passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
Betani was first admitted to Kanyama Level One Hospital near the team’s camp and later transferred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for further treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff and her family, she did not survive.
Betani, a key player in Zambia’s provisional squad, was set to play in the match against Ghana scheduled for Friday, February 23, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Her sudden death has deeply saddened her teammates, coaches, and fans, sending shockwaves through the football community.
In a statement, FAZ extended its deepest condolences to Betani’s family, friends, and club, Indeni Roses, while also acknowledging the support of family members, club officials, and medical staff during Betani’s hospitalization.
Betani’s last match for Indeni Roses was on February 11, 2024, in the Zambian Women’s Super League.
