Kumasi-based media personality Oheneba Nana Asiedu of Wontumi FM has been granted bail following his arrest on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The arrest was in connection with allegations of publishing false news related to Ghana’s upcoming December general elections.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command invited Oheneba on Friday, November 22, after he allegedly encouraged voters to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate days—a statement deemed by the police as “false and likely to disturb public peace.”
Authorities stated that such misinformation could confuse voters and undermine public confidence in the electoral process. Electoral laws mandate voting for all candidates on the same day, and the presenter’s comments were flagged as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) condemned the incident, emphasizing the importance of accurate information to maintain peace and stability during elections. The NCCE also urged citizens to rely on verified sources for electoral updates.
As part of his bail conditions, Oheneba Nana Asiedu must report to the police periodically. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the intent and potential impact of his remarks.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful election and has cautioned media outlets against disseminating unverified information.
