Some residents of Akwatia in the Eastern Region have openly declared that they will only cast their votes if they receive money from political parties contesting in the ongoing by-election.
At the Zongo-Vawaso Electoral Area, a number of constituents told Citi News on Tuesday, September 2, that they were dissatisfied because political actors had been unable to distribute money due to the heavy security presence in the town.
“Because of the security, the politicians couldn’t share money. We didn’t get anything,” one resident said.
Another voter added, “We have been trained this way; we love money. We have always been given money during elections, and we are waiting to receive something before we vote. We haven’t voted yet.”
The by-election is being contested by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Bediako. It was necessitated by the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
Although the Electoral Commission and security agencies have assured the public of a free and fair process, allegations of vote-buying and voter inducement have once again surfaced, raising concerns about the integrity of the polls.
