The Western Region has reported 14 fatalities from a cholera outbreak, with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality identified as the epicenters. According to Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, the Regional Director of Health Services, over 800 cases have been recorded across eight districts, with Shama and Ahanta West also experiencing significant outbreaks.
In an interview with Citi News in Takoradi, Dr. Yeboah highlighted the need for strict adherence to preventive measures to contain the outbreak. “We have lost 14 people so far. Personal hygiene is very important—wash your hands regularly, eat warm food, and report any symptoms to the nearest health facility immediately,” he emphasized.
The Regional Public Health Promotion Office has intensified its awareness campaign, implementing measures such as banning the sale of vegetables by food vendors to curb the spread. Dr. Yeboah reassured the public that cholera treatment is free, and health facilities are equipped with the necessary resources to care for patients.
Deputy Regional Director for Public Health, Dr. Gifty Amugi, added that free cholera vaccinations are available for children over one year old. She encouraged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated to protect them from the disease.
