The Black Stars of Ghana have received a significant boost with the arrival of attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus at their camp in Kumasi ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). However, Kudus’ arrival came with a physiotherapist provided by West Ham, as the former Ajax player is currently nursing a hamstring injury, potentially jeopardizing his participation in Ghana’s opening game against Cape Verde.
Kudus’ delayed arrival is attributed to the hamstring issue that arose after West Ham’s recent victory over Arsenal on December 28. Following the match, the 23-year-old experienced tightness in his hamstring, prompting immediate assessment by West Ham’s medical team. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) was duly informed about the injury, confirmed during Chris Hughton’s squad announcement press conference.
Initially expected to join his teammates earlier, Kudus required an extended period of 5-6 days for recuperation, leading to the delay in his arrival. He has now joined the squad in Kumasi before their departure to Ivory Coast for the tournament.
Kudus, who missed the 2021 AFCON due to a rib fracture, is eager to make his debut in the competition for the Black Stars. The accompanying physiotherapist from West Ham will collaborate with the Ghanaian medical team to ensure the midfielder attains full fitness before his potential participation in the tournament.
Kudus has showcased an impressive form this season, netting 10 goals in all competitions for West Ham since his summer transfer from Ajax, a move that saw him transfer for over 40 million euros. His inclusion in the squad, albeit with injury concerns, is anticipated to bolster the Black Stars’ attacking prowess should he regain fitness in time for subsequent matches.
