President John Dramani Mahama has reassured Ghanaians that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will not be privatised under his leadership, despite its financial challenges.
Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebration at Black Star Square in Accra, Mahama addressed rising concerns about the fate of ECG, citing a debt burden of GH¢68 billion caused by poor governance over the past eight years. He emphasized that while the power distributor is struggling, privatisation is not the solution.
“The ECG has been crippled by mismanagement, but I want to make it clear—there will be no privatisation,” Mahama said. “Instead, we will explore public-private partnerships to bring efficiency to power distribution and help reduce tariffs.”
