Ghana’s National Men’s Under 20 Football Team, the Black Satellites, have been placed in Group A for the 2024 WAFU Zone B Championship. The tournament is set to take place from October 17 to October 31, 2024.
Following the draw held today, Ghana will face off against Togo, Niger, and Benin in the group stage. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages after a series of round-robin matches.
In Group B, Nigeria, a traditional football powerhouse, is joined by Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, making it widely regarded as the “group of death.”
The Black Satellites enter the tournament with momentum, having secured gold at the 13th African Games held in Ghana in 2023. Their female counterparts, the Black Princesses, also claimed gold at the same event.
Ghana will aim to qualify for the African Championship for the first time since winning the 2021 U-20 AFCON, where standout players like Leicester City’s Abdul Fatawu Issahaku played key roles. Despite their 2021 triumph, Ghana was unable to compete in the U-20 World Cup due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
