The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released all withheld results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), providing much-needed relief to thousands of candidates previously affected by the delay.
The examination body had initially withheld over 10,000 results due to suspected examination malpractices but had assured the public of releasing them by February 28, 2025. The final decision to make the results available came after a legal battle and mounting pressure, including threats of nationwide protests by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
In an interview with Citi FM, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, confirmed that all pending results had been uploaded as promised. He stated, “As we promised, we kept to our promises. So by the close of February 28, we had uploaded all the results of the candidates whose results had been withheld.”
The release of the results followed a court order compelling WAEC to make the results available to the affected candidates. “The court had ordered that we should release the results of those candidates. And so we’ve gone ahead with all the results. So we don’t have any outstanding results as far as those exams are concerned,” Mr. Kapi added.
Despite the release, WAEC anticipates that some candidates might face delays in accessing their results and could raise concerns. Mr. Kapi explained, “Well, 28 was a Friday, and so we assume that the people are still waiting till the beginning of the week, you know, to begin to call the office and to register some complaints.”
He emphasized that the published results reflect the true performance of the candidates, underscoring WAEC’s commitment to transparency and fairness.
The release of the results has resolved a stressful period for affected students and their families, who had expressed anxiety over potential setbacks in pursuing further education. With the results now accessible, students can proceed with their academic and professional plans without further hindrance.
