Wa Senior High School has made headlines after qualifying for the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) without a biology student on their team.

At the Upper West regional qualifiers, the school clinched the top spot with 47 points, ahead of Kaleo Senior High Technical and St. Francis Girls’ SHS, who both scored 27 points. But the standout moment was the team’s unconventional makeup two contestants who are science students majoring in ICT, not biology.

“The two contestants are science students, yes, but they don’t offer biology. They’re both ICT majors,” revealed a third team member who sat on the bench during the contest.

In a competition where biology is considered a core component, their strategy was simple: self-study.

“Although we don’t study biology in class, we read it on our own,” said contestant Wisdom Gana. “We tracked the common topics that usually appear in contests and mastered them ourselves.”

That unorthodox preparation proved effective. The team delivered a confident performance and handled biology questions with ease, describing the contest as “normal.”

“We have a saying, impossible is nothing, and we believe in that,” the team said.

Wa SHS has been a regular at the NSMQ national level, although they’ve yet to reach the semi-finals or finals. With renewed confidence and a determined mindset, this year’s team is aiming higher.

“They’re not carrying two heads,” Wisdom added, referring to the traditionally dominant schools. “We’ll go there and give our best. We trust in God, and we believe in ourselves.”
