The Volta Diaspora Caucus staged a protest at Parliament House on Tuesday, expressing outrage over a derogatory comment made by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) member against Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle.

Clad in protest attire and holding placards, the group demanded an apology from the unidentified lawmaker responsible for the remark. The incident occurred during a parliamentary session on February 4, 2025, as Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings attempted to contribute to discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.

During the session, Speaker Alban Bagbin granted the floor to Majority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin. At this point, a voice from the Majority side shouted, referring to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings as the “daughter of a murderer.” Another MP further alleged that there was evidence suggesting her father had killed people.

The Volta Diaspora Caucus condemned the remarks as deeply offensive and called for an immediate and unreserved apology from the MP involved. Protesters emphasized the need for respect and decorum within the parliamentary chamber, highlighting the legacy of Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, as a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.

Speaker Bagbin has already condemned the remarks and issued a one-week ultimatum for the culprit to come forward or face disciplinary action. He described the comments as “unwarranted, unjustified, and deeply offensive,” offering an apology to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, her family, and the people of Anlo.

The protest drew attention both within and outside Parliament House, with many calling for greater accountability among MPs. Videos of the protest circulated on social media, amplifying calls for an apology and for measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.
