Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Commissions Ultra-Modern Recycling and Medical Waste Treatment Facilities in Upper West Region

Vice President and NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Monday, May 20, commissioned an ultra-modern Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) along with a Medical Waste Treatment facility in Kperiha, near Wa.

The IRECOP, designed to serve Wa and the broader Upper West Region, boasts an impressive capacity of processing 400 tons of municipal solid waste daily.

This substantial capacity is expected to effectively handle the waste generated across the entire region, presenting a sustainable solution to the area’s waste management challenges.

In addition, the Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility will address the collection and treatment of hazardous healthcare waste, including used syringes, blood-stained materials, pathological waste, Covid-19 waste, and waste from vaccination exercises.

These new facilities mark significant milestones in Ghana’s waste management infrastructure.

The IRECOP in Kperiha is the seventh out of 16 planned plants, while the medical waste treatment facility is the fourth out of 14 to be established.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the government and the Jospong Group of Companies.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the broader benefits of these facilities, noting that they will create over 1,000 direct jobs, contribute to a healthier environment, improve the health conditions of residents, enhance living conditions, and significantly reduce air, water, and land pollution.
