In a recent address, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed his dismay over the ongoing personal attacks within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party gears up for its flagbearer race next month. Dr. Bawumia vehemently refuted claims made by Kennedy Agyapong, stating that he had bribed constituency chairmen during the super delegates conference.
Addressing delegates in the Tatale-Sanguli constituency in the Northern Region on October 24, 2023, Dr. Bawumia voiced his frustration over the continuous spread of false information about him and his positions on various issues. He accused unnamed opponents of deliberately sowing disunity within the NPP.
Specifically, Dr. Bawumia addressed three recent allegations. Firstly, he tackled the claim made by Kennedy Agyapong that his campaign had offered 100,000 cedis and pickup trucks to all 275 constituency chairmen to secure their votes. Dr. Bawumia adamantly dismissed this accusation, asking the gathered delegates if they had witnessed any such pickups being distributed to their chairmen.
The Vice President also refuted allegations that he opposed the expansion of the electoral college. He clarified that he had been a strong supporter of the decision to broaden the electoral college, allowing polling station executives and electoral area coordinators to vote. He expressed his belief that, with the grace of God, this expansion would continue.
Lastly, Dr. Bawumia addressed rumors that he supported the idea of sitting Members of Parliament running unopposed in the 2024 elections. He denied this position attributed to him, further emphasizing the importance of fair and competitive elections.
