Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended heartfelt sympathies to those affected by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, resulting in the displacement of numerous families and livelihoods across the Volta Region and parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.
Dr. Bawumia personally visited some of the impacted communities in the Volta Region, as well as temporary shelters established to accommodate the victims. In his address to local Chiefs, community members, and evacuees, he encouraged them to seek solace in faith and express gratitude for the gift of life in the face of adversity.
Furthermore, the Vice President affirmed the government’s unwavering dedication to finding a lasting solution to the issue. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other government agencies, under the Inter-Ministerial Committee’s guidance, have taken swift action by relocating affected individuals to approximately 20 holding centers and delivering emergency relief supplies.
Dr. Bawumia reassured that the government is not only focused on temporary measures but is also committed to supporting the affected communities in rebuilding their lives. He praised NADMO’s efforts, emphasizing that their actions have prevented a potentially larger disaster.
During his visit, the Vice President toured communities such as New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District, as well as Sogakope and Sokpoe in the South Tongu District.
Accompanying the Vice President were key officials, including the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Volta Regional Minister Archibald Letsa, and representatives from NADMO and the Volta River Authority (VRA).
